Recharge Abilities

Monster abilities can have usage limits and recharge conditions. The system automatically extracts these from ability names written in a specific format.

Abilities with usage limits follow this Markdown pattern:

**_Ability Name (usage info)._** Description text...

The system parses the text inside the parentheses to determine:

  • How many uses the ability has
  • When/how it recharges

Abilities that can be used a limited number of times per day:

**_Innate Spellcasting (3/Day)._** The creature can cast...
**_Charm (1/Day)._** The creature targets one humanoid...

Simple usage counter without automatic recharge:

**_Legendary Resistance (3 Uses)._** If the dragon fails...
**_Divine Intervention (1 Use)._** The cleric calls upon...

Abilities that recharge at the start of each turn:

**_Sneak Attack (1/Turn)._** The rogue deals an extra...
**_Cunning Action (1/Turn)._** The rogue can take a bonus...

Abilities that recharge on a d6 roll at the start of each turn:

**_Fire Breath (Recharge 5-6)._** The dragon exhales fire...
**_Lightning Breath (Recharge 5-6)._** The dragon exhales...
**_Acid Spray (Recharge 4-6)._** The creature spits acid...

When the ability is used, roll a d6 at the start of each subsequent turn. The ability recharges if you roll within the specified range.

PatternRecharges On
Recharge 6Roll of 6 only
Recharge 5-6Roll of 5 or 6
Recharge 4-6Roll of 4, 5, or 6

Special case for abilities that only recharge on a natural 6:

**_Psychic Scream (Recharge 6)._** The creature emits...

Abilities that recharge after a rest:

**_Second Wind (1/Short Rest)._** The fighter regains...
**_Action Surge (1/Long Rest)._** The fighter can take...
**_Channel Divinity (2/Short Rest)._** The cleric can...

Single-use abilities that recharge after any rest:

**_Animate Chains (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest)._**
Up to four chains the devil can see...

Magic item descriptions can include charge and recharge phrasing that the system recognizes when seeding SRD items. Use plain text in the description; no extra markup required.

Supported charge phrases

This item has 3 charges.
This item contains 7 charges.
This item is holding 5 charges.
This item has 1d6+2 charges.
This item starts with 2d4 + 1 charges.

Supported recharge phrases

It regains 1d6+1 charges daily at dawn.

Spellcasting entries also track slot usage:

1st level (4 slots): _magic missile_, _shield_
2nd level (3 slots): _misty step_, _hold person_
3rd level (2 slots): _fireball_, _counterspell_
**_Legendary Resistance (3/Day)._** If the dragon fails a
saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
**_Fire Breath (Recharge 5-6)._** The dragon exhales fire
in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a
{DC 8 + prof + con DEX}, taking {12d6 fire} on a failed
save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
**_Innate Spellcasting (3/Day)._** The creature can innately
cast the following spells, requiring no material components:
**_Frightful Presence (1/Day)._** Each creature of the
creature's choice within 120 feet must succeed on a
{DC 8 + prof + cha WIS} or become frightened for 1 minute.
**_Teleport (Recharge 4-6)._** The creature magically
teleports up to 120 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.
**_Second Wind (1/Short Rest)._** As a bonus action,
the fighter regains {1d10 + level hp}.
**_Action Surge (1/Long Rest)._** The fighter can take
one additional action on their turn.

The encounter system automatically:

  1. Extracts abilities from monster action text
  2. Tracks usage during combat
  3. Handles recharge rolls for “Recharge X-Y” abilities
  4. Resets uses at appropriate times (turn start, rest, etc.)
TypeBehavior
noNo automatic recharge (X/Day, X Uses, rest-based)
turnRecharges at start of each turn (X/Turn)
dieRoll d6 at turn start, recharge on success
  1. Use exact formatting - The parser looks for specific patterns like (3/Day) or (Recharge 5-6)
  2. Include the period - End the ability name section with ).***
  3. Capitalize consistently - Both 3/Day and 3/day work, but be consistent
  4. Use standard ranges - Recharge ranges should use hyphens: 5-6, not 5 to 6
